CINEMATOGRAPHIC DRAWINGSDeep within Portuguese modernism, around the magazine Presença, the figure of Júlio dos Reis Pereira (or of his literary pseudonym, Saúl Dias) occupies a central position – like that of his brother, José Régio, the founder of the magazine, with Branquinho da Fonseca and João Gaspar Simões. Yet his work is better known due to the late paintings from the series Poeta, which were greatly influenced by the overseeing figure of Marc Chagall. However, when one looks back into his artistic past we come across expressionist painting and drawing close to George Grosz. The drawings belonging to the Colecção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos are from this period, and in them there is a fluid figuration done in Indian ink which constructs a gallery of characters who correspond to stereotypes. However, their caricatural nature is countered by the complexity and violence of the spaces, in a view of the fragmented city that in some cases seems to come close to the spaces of Walter Röhrig in German expressionist cinema. This cinematographic dimension to his drawings at the end of the twenties and early thirties marks a path that was not followed enough in Portuguese art before World War II, and thus signals the rare place that his more interesting and lively expression possessed in drawing.Delfim Sardo

A Dual Soul: The Intertwined Worlds of Júlio Maria dos Reis Pereira

In the vibrant tapestry of Portuguese Modernism, few figures possess a creative identity as multifaceted and profound as Júlio Maria dos Reis Pereira. Born in Vila do Conde in 1902, Pereira did not merely inhabit the artistic landscape of his era; he helped reshape it through a rare duality of spirit. To the world of visual arts, he was known simply as Júlio, a painter and draftsman whose lines captured the tremors of the human psyche. Yet, in the realm of letters, he adopted the pseudonym Saúl Dias, channeling his introspective depths into evocative poetry. This symbiotic relationship between image and word allowed him to explore the boundaries of expressionism and surrealism with a unique, lyrical intensity that bridged the gap between the seen and the felt.

His creative journey was deeply rooted in the intellectual ferment of the second generation of Portuguese Modernism. Growing up alongside his brother, the celebrated writer José Régio, Pereira was immersed in an environment where art and literature were inseparable. This familial bond was more than a mere connection; it was a lifelong artistic partnership. As Régio founded the influential magazine Presença, Júlio stood at its heart, contributing works that mirrored the movement's preoccupation with psychological depth and existential inquiry. His early influences—the haunting legacies of António Machado and Fernando Pessoa—instilled in him a lifelong fascination with themes of isolation, melancholy, and the elusive search for truth.

The Language of Line and Shadow

Pereira’s technical mastery was most strikingly evident in his command of black ink and the deliberate use of contrast. His drawings, often characterized by meticulous hatching and cross-hashing, possess a cinematographic quality that evokes the fragmented, unsettling spaces of German Expressionist cinema. In these works, he moved beyond simple representation to create a gallery of characters and archetypes. While some of his early sketches leaned toward a caricatural, almost satirical style reminiscent of George Grosz, they were always anchored by a complex, violent sense of space that challenged the viewer's perception of reality.

As his career matured, his aesthetic underwent a fascinating evolution. The raw, biting energy of his early expressionist period eventually gave way to a more dreamlike, lyrical sensibility. His later painting series, such as the Poeta works, reveal a profound influence from the whimsical yet poignant style of Marc Chagall. In these pieces, the starkness of his earlier ink drawings softened into a surrealist reverie, where figures and landscapes seem to float within a subconscious landscape. This transition marked his ability to move from the external critique of society to an internal exploration of the soul, blending the boundaries between reality and myth.

Legacy of a Modernist Visionary

The historical significance of Júlio Maria dos Reis Pereira lies in his refusal to adhere to the rigid constraints of any single movement. He was an artist who could inhabit the shadows of expressionism one moment and the luminous, floating worlds of surrealism the next. His work remains a vital testament to the complexity of the Portuguese modernist spirit—a spirit that sought to find beauty within the fragmented and meaning within the melancholic.

Today, his contributions are preserved as essential pillars of 20th-century art history. His legacy is defined by several key elements:

  • The Synthesis of Arts: His ability to unify the poetic voice of Saúl Dias with the visual language of Júlio created a holistic artistic experience.
  • Psychological Depth: Through recurring motifs like solitary figures and caged birds, he transformed the canvas into a mirror for human longing and confinement.
  • Modernist Innovation: His role in the Presença movement helped establish a new vocabulary for Portuguese art, moving away from traditionalism toward an avant-garde exploration of the subconscious.
