Inspired by artifacts from ancient tombs in Yeonggang-dong and Hwangseong-dong in Gyeongju and after studying paintings dating to Tang China, the rich style of aristocratic women of the Unified Silla period is reproduced here with beautifully patterned fabric. Patterns were dyed on two kinds of silk fabric of different thickness and transparency. Jeogori was produced by overlaying the two different silk fabrics, and chima was made with lightweight silk dyed in blue and patterned with silk.

Lee Kyung Sun: A Portrait of Korean Elegance and Resilience

Lee Kyung Sun (Lee Sun-kyun), born March 2, 1975, in Seoul, South Korea, is a prominent figure in contemporary Korean art, recognized primarily for his captivating studio photographs capturing the beauty of traditional Korean clothing—particularly those inspired by the Unified Silla and Goryeo Dynasties. His artistic vision transcends mere representation; it delves into conveying profound cultural heritage alongside an exploration of personal introspection.
  • Early Life & Artistic Beginnings: Sun-kyun’s formative years were marked by a dedication to Korean National University of Arts (KNUA), where he honed his skills in photography and embarked on a journey toward artistic expression rooted in Korean cultural traditions.
  • Influence of Lee Ungno: He cites the influence of Korean master Lee Ungno as pivotal, particularly Ungno’s pioneering use of abstraction—specifically his “Abstract Letter” series—to communicate emotion and spiritual depth through visual language. This stylistic approach profoundly shaped Sun-kyun's artistic sensibilities.
  • The Goryeo Dynasty Series: Sun-kyun gained considerable acclaim for his meticulously crafted photographs depicting garments from the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1368). These images aren’t simply reproductions; they are imbued with symbolic resonance, reflecting the grandeur and refinement of Korean aristocratic attire. The artist skillfully employs lighting and composition to evoke a sense of serenity and timeless beauty.

Technique & Aesthetic Considerations

Sun-kyun's photographic technique prioritizes careful observation and meticulous execution. He utilizes studio setups, employing controlled lighting—often diffused—to illuminate subjects with an ethereal glow. The artist’s compositional choices emphasize balance and symmetry, mirroring the aesthetic principles prevalent in Korean art history. Furthermore, he pays close attention to textural detail, capturing the subtle nuances of silk fabrics and embroidery—elements that speak volumes about Korean craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
  • Color Palette: Sun-kyun favors muted palettes—primarily creams, golds, and browns—that harmonize with the inherent colors of the textiles. These hues evoke a sense of understated elegance and convey a connection to Korea’s natural landscape.
  • Compositional Balance: The artist meticulously arranges subjects within frames, creating balanced compositions that draw the viewer's eye and invite contemplation. Symmetry plays a crucial role in conveying harmony and stability—themes central to Korean artistic traditions.

Notable Achievements & Recognition

Sun-kyun’s work has garnered international recognition, appearing in prestigious art publications and exhibitions worldwide. His photographs have been lauded for their ability to encapsulate the spirit of Korean culture while simultaneously exploring themes of identity and memory. Notably, his portrayal of Lee Ungno Museum—a celebration of Korean artistic legacy—demonstrates a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and fostering dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic perspectives.
  • Featured Exhibitions: His images have graced galleries across Europe and North America, showcasing the beauty of Korean textiles and capturing moments of quiet contemplation.
  • Critical Acclaim: Critics consistently praise Sun-kyun’s artistic vision—his ability to convey emotion through visual storytelling—and his dedication to honoring Korean cultural traditions.

Legacy & Significance

Lee Kyung Sun's contribution to contemporary Korean art lies in his masterful fusion of tradition and innovation. He elevates the humble garment into a vehicle for conveying profound artistic ideas—themes of beauty, serenity, and remembrance—solidifying his place as a visionary artist who embodies Korea’s rich cultural heritage while engaging with universal human experiences. His work serves as an enduring testament to the power of visual art to illuminate history and inspire contemplation.
