Born in the vibrant heart of Belfast on January 15, 1902, Olive Henry emerged as a singular force in the twentieth-century Northern Irish art scene. Her life was a masterful tapestry woven from diverse disciplines, ranging from the delicate precision of stained glass design to the evocative textures of oil and watercolor landscapes. As the daughter of tea merchant George Adams Henry, her upbringing in Belfast provided a foundation of stability that allowed her to pursue an expansive artistic education. After attending Victoria College, she sought further refinement through night classes at the Belfast School of Art, a period of study that would eventually lead her toward a career defined by both technical mastery and profound creative vision.
The trajectory of Henry’s career was irrevocably altered by a chance encounter in the autumn of 1919. A visit to Victoria College by the owner of Clokey Stained Glass Studios resulted in an apprenticeship that would span over five decades. Within the luminous atmosphere of the glass studios, Henry honed a skill set that made her a rarity in her era; she is believed to have been the only female stained glass artist working in Northern Ireland during the first half of the twentieth century. This work required an intimate understanding of how light interacts with color and form, a lesson that would later permeate her paintings. Her long tenure at Clokey’s, which lasted until her retirement in 1972, allowed her to contribute to the architectural and spiritual landscape of Ireland through windows that captured the very essence of divinity and light.
