A 3rd century Roman martyr, Saint Sebastian, is shown here lying on the ground after his martyrdom: he was shot through with arrows by the Roman soldiers. The artist has performed a difficult exercise in the foreshortened perspective of the stretched out body, whereas usually, Saint Sebastian is shown standing. The light and shade throw dramatic lighting on the face of the saint, bearing witness to the influence of Caravaggio on the artist and, at the same time, his attention to detail of the anatomy of the Saint likens him to Michelangelo.

Alterazioni Video: Architects of the Unfinished

Born in Milan, Italy, in 2004, Alterazioni Video emerged from a confluence of artistic and social currents – a potent blend of Italian post-war experimentalism, the burgeoning digital art scene, and a critical engagement with contemporary urban landscapes. The collective, comprised of Paololuca Barbieri Marchi, Alberto Caffarelli, Matteo Erenbourg, Andrea Masu, and Giacomo Porfiri, didn’t simply create art; they initiated a rigorous investigation into the overlooked spaces and abandoned projects that define Italy's recent history. Their work isn’t about grand narratives or polished aesthetics; it’s fundamentally rooted in documentation, observation, and a deliberate disruption of conventional artistic practice.

Initially influenced by the legacy of Italian “video hoodlums” of the 1970s – figures who used video as a tool for subversive communication and direct action – Alterazioni Video inherited a tradition of challenging established power structures. This lineage is evident in their early projects, such as *Disobedience* (2005) at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and *Empowerment in Genoa* (2004), which directly supported the Black Bloc during the G8 protests. These endeavors weren’t merely artistic statements; they were active interventions within a politically charged environment, reflecting a commitment to social engagement that remains central to their work.

The Incompiuto Project: Mapping the Absent

At the heart of Alterazioni Video's practice lies the *Incompiuto* project – a systematic mapping and documentation of over 750 unfinished architectural works scattered across Italy. This ambitious undertaking began as a digital mapping initiative, meticulously cataloging these “ruins of the contemporary era” with an unprecedented level of detail: location, construction date, scale, and degree of incompletion. As Marco Scotini observed, these abandoned structures represent "monuments to something that never existed," offering a critical lens through which to examine Italy’s economic trajectory, urban planning decisions, and broader social narratives.

The *Incompiuto* project quickly evolved beyond its initial digital form. It manifested in a diverse range of media – large-scale prints, evocative videos like *Intervallo* (2009), which playfully referenced the Italian RAI television program’s use of filler footage to fill gaps in broadcasts, and immersive installations. The collective's approach is characterized by a deliberate blurring of boundaries between art, documentation, and activism, reflecting their core belief that artistic practice can be a powerful tool for social critique and awareness.

A Style Emerges: From Ruins to Fashion

The *Incompiuto* project didn’t simply produce documentation; it fostered the development of a distinct artistic style. This style is defined by its meticulous attention to detail, its fragmented visual language, and its engagement with themes of absence, memory, and the forgotten. The collective's work frequently incorporates elements of collage, assemblage, and appropriation, drawing on architectural drawings, photographs, and other sources to create layered and complex compositions.

Significantly, Alterazioni Video’s style gained international recognition through collaborations such as their partnership with Virgil Abloh, the artistic director of Louis Vuitton. Abloh was deeply inspired by the *Incompiuto* project, incorporating its visual language into his 2019 menswear collection, Off-WhiteTM. This collaboration demonstrated the project's broader cultural relevance and its ability to transcend traditional art boundaries, reaching a wider audience through the fashion industry.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Alterazioni Video’s work has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Solo shows have graced institutions such as the Chelsea Art Museum in New York (2006), Mar Museum of Art Ravenna (2010), and viafarini in Milan (2012). The collective's participation in major international events, including the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007) and Manifesta Trentino (2008), cemented their position as key players within the contemporary art scene. Their work has also been featured in group exhibitions at venues like Treiennale Bovisa (2008) and Zoom (2018).

Beyond institutional exhibitions, Alterazioni Video’s influence extends to academic circles. Their research has been documented in scholarly publications such as “Reimagining unfinished architectures: ruin perspectives between art and urban studies” (JSTOR, 2017), highlighting the project's significance within the fields of architecture, media theory, and cultural studies. The collective continues to push the boundaries of artistic practice, exploring new ways to engage with contemporary issues through their unique lens of architectural ruins and social critique.
