Peter Ritzen, a name synonymous with passionate performance and innovative composition, is a Flemish pianist, composer, and conductor whose career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of artistic expression and a profound dedication to fostering intercultural dialogue. Born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1956, Ritzen’s musical journey began with rigorous training at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where he studied piano and chamber music under the tutelage of Louis Pas and François Glorieux. This foundational education instilled in him not only technical mastery but also a deep appreciation for the rich traditions of classical music.

However, Ritzen’s ambition extended beyond the established canon. He sought further refinement at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, immersing himself in the world of Franz Liszt under the guidance of Tatiana Nikolayeva, and later honed his skills at the École Normale de Musique de Paris ‘Alfred Cortot’, studying with Marian Ribicky. He served as artistic director and chairman of the Jury for the International Piano Competition ‘Theodor Leschetizky’ in Taipei in 2000 and 2004, further solidifying his role as a mentor and champion of young talent.

His dedication to fostering international collaboration reached new heights with the establishment of the New Cosmos International Music Festival in 2015. This festival, held at Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt, Austria, embodies Ritzen’s vision of uniting Far Eastern musicians with European musical traditions. The inaugural concert featured world-famous cellist Christine Walevska, setting a precedent for future performances that showcase the power of cross-cultural artistic exchange.

The New Cosmos Philharmonic and Continued Innovation

In 2016, Ritzen founded the Vienna-based New Cosmos Philharmonic, which serves as the festival orchestra for the annual New Cosmos International Music Festival. This ensemble allows him to realize his ambitious compositional ideas on a grand scale, bringing together musicians from diverse backgrounds to perform innovative works that push the boundaries of classical music.

Recent achievements include conducting the New Cosmos Philharmonic at the Golden Hall of Musikverein in Vienna in 2017, premiering his Symphonic Poem ‘Die Wildrose’. In recognition of his significant contributions to the arts, Ritzen was knighted Officer in the Order of Leopold in November 2018.
