The Japanese artist duo Exonemo who continuously combines old things and new things displayed (2014) series. This work utilizes a portrait of eccentric scene of a single color created by a colored screen and a human body. In this work, common LCD display and human body are re-intermediated into post-digital frame. Each work in this portrait series features a person painted entirely in a single shade of color, displayed on an LCD which has been entirely painted in the same color except for the human subject on the screen. In particular, the background and foreground are painted in the same paint, and human body becomes an electronic display body. In addition, from the perspective of contents, the portrait of body painting in a single color asks a question about the definition of our body in the world of networking information. With these boundaries erased, subject can be said to become the sense of ambiguity and confusion, and a questioning of the definition of whether the individual depicted is human being or representation.Sembo Kensuke and AKAIWA Yae formed the artist unit Exonemo in 1999. Their experimental projects are explorations of the paradoxes of digital and analog computer networked and actual environments in our lives. Their movie won the Golden Nica for Net Vision category at Prix Ars Electronica 2006. They have been organizing the IDPW gatherings and Internet Yami-Ichi(blak market) since 2012.

A Pioneering Dialogue: The Experimental World of exonemo

The artistic partnership of Kensuke Sembo and Yae Akaiwa, known collectively as exonemo, emerged in the vibrant digital landscape of 1996 Tokyo. At a time when the internet was transitioning from an academic tool to a burgeoning public sphere, exonemo began exploring the complex relationship between the physical and virtual realms—a dialogue that continues to define their groundbreaking work today. Their practice isn’t simply *about* technology; it's a nuanced investigation into how technology alters our perception of reality, physicality, and even emotion. Rather than presenting polished visions of a futuristic world, exonemo consistently reveals the glitches, paradoxes, and often humorous incongruities inherent in this increasingly interconnected existence.

Early Explorations & The Rise of Net Art

Sembo and Akaiwa’s initial forays into art were deeply rooted in the nascent possibilities of the internet. They weren't interested in replicating traditional artistic forms online, but rather in exploiting the unique characteristics of the medium itself—its ephemerality, its interactivity, and its capacity to transcend geographical boundaries. This approach positioned them at the forefront of what became known as “Net Art,” a movement that challenged conventional notions of authorship, ownership, and the art object. Their early projects often involved playful interventions into existing digital spaces, disrupting established norms and prompting viewers to question the very nature of online experience. They quickly gained recognition for their ability to create works that were both conceptually rigorous and visually engaging, establishing a distinctive voice within the burgeoning net art community.

Bridging Digital & Analog: The Body Paint Series and Beyond

While firmly grounded in digital exploration, exonemo’s work has never been confined to the screen. A pivotal moment in their development came with the Body Paint series, a striking collection of photographs documenting Akaiwa adorned with intricate patterns created using computer-generated imagery projected directly onto her skin. This project beautifully encapsulates their core concerns: the interplay between the virtual and the tangible, the fragility of the human form in an increasingly mediated world, and the blurring lines between identity and representation. The series isn’t merely a visual spectacle; it's a meditation on how technology shapes our understanding of the body itself. This exploration expanded into other projects that deliberately juxtapose digital elements with analog materials—creating installations that invite viewers to physically interact with their work, often in unexpected ways.

IDPW & Internet Yami-Ichi: Fostering Communities and Tangible Experiences

exonemo’s influence extends far beyond the confines of traditional art institutions. In 2012, they founded Internet Yami-Ichi, a unique “internet black market” that brings the often intangible world of online culture into physical space. This flea market-style event allows artists and creators to sell digital artifacts—from obsolete software and glitch art prints to custom-made hardware and internet ephemera—creating a vibrant community around shared interests and unconventional aesthetics. Simultaneously, they began organizing IDPW gatherings, which serve as platforms for artists, hackers, and thinkers to exchange ideas and collaborate on experimental projects. These initiatives demonstrate exonemo’s commitment to fostering dialogue and creating opportunities for artistic expression outside of established channels.

Recognition & Lasting Impact

exonemo's innovative approach has garnered international acclaim, including the prestigious Golden Nica award at Prix Ars Electronica in 2006 for their project *The Road Movie*. Their work has been exhibited at renowned institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the New Museum, solidifying their position as leading figures in contemporary art. Relocating to New York in 2015 further broadened their reach and influence, allowing them to engage with a diverse artistic community and continue pushing the boundaries of digital/analog expression. exonemo’s lasting significance lies not only in their pioneering use of technology but also in their ability to anticipate and articulate the profound cultural shifts that have shaped our relationship with the internet—a dialogue that remains as relevant and compelling today as it was at the dawn of the digital age.
