The stone sculptor Adam Kraft, who created the tabernacle in the Church of St. Lawrence in Nuremberg in the years from 1493 to 1496, was one of the pre-eminent sculptors active in Franconia around 1500, along with Veit Stoss and Tilman Riemenschneider. The girl with the coats of arms is the only work by this artist to be found in a museum outside Nuremberg. She is sturdily built and has all the freshness of real-life humanity, without any touch of idealization. She is holding the heraldic coats of arms of two patrician families: in her right hand, that of the Imhoffs, and in her left, that of the Muffels. In 1486, Hans V. Imhoff had married Katharina Muffel von Eschenau. The girl with the coats of arms may have adorned stone steps at the Imhoff trading house in Nuremberg’s Tucherstrasse.
