antoine charles horace vernet aka carle vernet (1758 – 1836)
Antoine Charles Horace Vernet (Carle Vernet) was a French painter renowned for dynamic battle scenes glorifying Napoleon, captivating hunting art, & masterful horse depictions. Son of Claude Joseph Vernet, father of Horace Vernet.
The circumstances surrounding the execution of this study are obscure. Yet the existence of a cognate image by the artist Achille-Etna Michallon (1796–1822), which was acquired at the latter’s estate sale by another contemporary, Léon Cogniet (1794–1880), testifies to the avid interest in Arab dress among young artists of the Romantic generation. The painting by Michallon is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orléans.
