Carlo Moretti (1828-1898), born in Milan, worked for many years as a teacher of singing and piano in the United States, New York and San Francisco. He returned to Italy in 1885, settling in Monza. In his will he appoints the Ospedale Maggiore as universal heir, with the obligation of a usufructuary income in favor of his brother and sister. The commission of the portrait is entrusted to Antonio Pasinetti, who prefers a detailed physiognomic representation of the benefactor to a detailed environmental representation.
