  • Dimensions78.0 x 67.0 cm

Elisabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun (? – ?)

Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) was a leading portraitist of 18th-century French aristocracy, famed for her elegant depictions of Marie Antoinette and other prominent figures. Her Rococo and Neoclassical style captured both likeness and personality with refined beauty.

While in Russia, Vigée Le Brun painted five portraits of the Grand Duchess (1779–1826), of which this one, intended for the sitter’s mother, has remained the property of the Grand Duchess’s descendants. As described by the artist, the subject’s “features were fine and regular, her face a perfect oval; her beautiful complexion . . . had a paleness altogether in harmony with the expression on her face.” She wears a muslin dress and a scarf that twists around her head and under her chin.
