The most innovative painter of his generation, Barocci enjoyed the patronage of Duke Francesco Maria della Rovere in Urbino, the capital of the region known as the Marches. This unidentified, refined young man, painted in the 1570s, is most likely from the Duke’s circle. The artist sought to depict his sitters in the most natural way, thus getting away from the stiff artificiality of many Italian portraits at mid-century. As with all of Barocci’s memorable paintings, his portraits broke new ground and were influential on the most important artists active early in the next century.
