Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921) was a leading Belgian Symbolist painter known for his evocative portraits, dreamlike scenes & exploration of themes like introspection, mythology, and the feminine mystique. Discover his unique blend of realism & ethereal
Portraited is depicted sitting. Augustinus van Rijckevorsel is depicted in three-quarters position, his face is used to right (left for the viewer), the hands folded in the lap. He's dressed in a dark coat with gray pants. An old photo for restoration shows that his high white collar has changed with overpainting and a loose piece of collar has been added at the place of his neck. The background is kept sober, a chamber wall with vaguely marked wallpaper. A dark plinth and door style frame the figure. Belongs to pendant of wife maiden Maria Francisca Louisa Dommer van Poldersveldt.
