Commorants sit on rocks by the sea, bathing in the midnight sun in a coastal landscape. A sailboat is moving away on the calm sea. The thin moon rests above steep mountains. Saal was a German painter who was best known for his paintings of Norwegian landscapes. He was classmates with the famous Norwegian painter Hans Gude, at the art academy if Düsseldorf. The two travelled to Norway several times, to paint an experience he Norwegian nature.
