The altarpiece was painted by Giovanni Francesco Caroto for the altar of the Church of Saint Massenza, originally located in the crypt of Trento cathedral’s.In the period from 1738 to 1743, the canvas was trimmed to fit a new frame, allegedly by the painter Nicolò Dorigati who added to it the figure of Saint Giovannino. The art work is very important for the local religious cult and tradition, because to the left one sees the patron saints of the diocese, Vigilius and Massenza. In the background is depicted the episode preceding Saint Vigilius’ martyrdom, namely the saint’s overturning of the statue of a pagan god in the course of his evangelisation of Val Rendena.
