Portrait of Mrs Marie Jeannette de Lange, Jan Toorop, 1900
1900
71.0 x 77.0 cm
The painting is painted in a pointillistic technique. The portrait is placed to the right, turned to the viewer, while she studies a book in the light of a petroleum lamp. She is dressed in a pink dress, so-called reform clothing, and has simply raised her hair. On the table on the left is partly the petroleum lamp placed next to a vase of roses on a table covered with a flowered rug. Flowers in a large vase in the background are visually incorporated into the pattern of decorative wallpaper.
