Turkish Women in the Countryside near Istanbul, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, c. 1720 - c. 1737

  • Creation date1737
  • Dimensions44.0 x 58.0 cm
A group of Turkish women sitting on the ground in a landscape near Constantinople view a phenomenon in the form of a human figure (star statue?) in the sky. It seems like an old underpainting is coming through the paint layer, but the blurry appearance in the air is meant to be. What story is behind this painting is unknown. Perhaps Vanmour has depicted a Turkish folk story or is it the hallucinations of opium smoking women?
