jean laurent mosnier (1743 – 1808)
Jean-Laurent Mosnier (1743-1808): French portrait & miniature painter to Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette. Explore elegant 18th/19th century society art!
Mosnier was a favored portraitist at the French court, who worked both on ivory and on canvas; after the French Revolution, he led an itinerant life, moving first to London and then Hamburg and St. Petersburg. The costume in which Louis XVI is represented is identical to that worn in a miniature of him attributed Antoine Callet (1741–1823) dated 1787, also in The Met’s collection.
