Museo del Traje (Madrid, Spain)

Explore Spain’s fashion heritage at Museo del Traje! Discover stunning costumes spanning centuries within Madrid's modernist building – a unique blend of history & design.

In 1900, Jeanne Paquin was already leading the representatives of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture (trade association of high fashion) and in 1906 she was ahead of Poiret as the first Parisian couturier to remove the corset in female dress. She was the founder of one of the most important French fashion brands of the first half of the 20th century. The dressmaker died in 1936, but the firm would continue until 1956 with a strong Spanish style, as Ana de Pombo and later Antonio Castillo (who later became the designer at Lanvin) took over the design of the new collections. However, this dress seems to come after those and could be a design by Colette Massignac or by the French Basque Lou Claverie, who takes charge of the brand in 1949. It seems to resemble the Spanish style in the use of flounces and a closer resemblance to the use of volumes of the New Look style which became widespread internationally from 1947.
