The majestic painting, divided into three overlapping panels, originally was hung above the marble sepulchre that Ulrich von Liechtenstein, prince bishop of Trento, had commissioned for himself in the cathedral in 1504, one year before his death. The artwork, previously attributed to Dürer and to Giacomo da Vicenza, was later attributed to an anonymous artist, probably from the North, who was influenced by Italian Renaissance painting from the Veneto region.
