Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889): A pivotal Japanese painter & caricaturist bridging Edo to Meiji eras. Known for dynamic ukiyo-e, folklore themes, satirical art, and pioneering manga. The 'last virtuoso' of traditional painting!
The sketches here show Japanese such as Daikoku and Urashima Tarō and images of Chinese immortals or figure of the Twenty-Four Paragons of Filial Piety. Though long attributed to Kyōsai, these sketches do not seem to be in hand of the master, and could have been created by a late nineteenth Kano artist of the day.
