Le Bouret, a canal in Capbreton in southwestern France, is on low-lying land near the coast. Its slow-moving waters provide a perfect surface for exploring reflective effects of sky and surroundings. Here, the reds and greens of the coastal forest contrast with the purple of the evening sky, refracting and reflecting off the water in various ways.A student of Léon Bonnat and Carolus-Duran, both of whom had studied in Spain, Louis Le Camus took over their Velazquez-inspired brushwork for his canvases. Mainly a landscapist, he traveled often from his home in Paris, where he exhibited beginning in 1874.
