Design for church interior with Noli Me Tangere window
1900
53.0 x 53.0 cm
Tiffany conceived his interiors as complete works of art, and his holistic approach is evident in this drawing of an altar wall. Beneath ornate mosaic arches are a beautifully rendered stained-glass window of Christ appearing to Mary Magdalen, an embroidered velvet hanging, a stone memorial tablet, gold-colored columns, and decorative wall painting. The ornamental mosaic decoration plays an important role in unifying these diverse elements. Done almost entirely in gold, green, and purple, it embraces the overall color palette of the church. Its intricate patterns are picked up in the embroidery of the velvet hanging and the wall painting bordering the window. Together, the mosaic and the mosaic-like elements serve to enliven what would otherwise be solid fields of color.
