michiel jansz van miereveld (1567 – 1641)

Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt (1567-1641) was a leading Dutch Golden Age portrait painter known for his sincere, detailed depictions of nobility & royalty. Explore his harmonious color palettes and prolific workshop – over 500 attributed works!

The Leeuwarden Series: Adversaries of the Republic For Spinola’s biography see the entry on Van Mierevelt’s portrait of him (SK-A-3953). That painting, which is dated 1609, was the prototype for the present work. Contrary to what is said in past Rijksmuseum catalogues, this bust-length portrait of Spinola is not signed by Van Mierevelt; his name is merely inscribed on the panel. The work is a product of Van Mierevelt’s workshop.
