Pier Paolo Calzolari employs diverse materials, privileging those that are “alive” and that change over time – like moss, tobacco leaves, ice and wax – a factor that places him close to the Arte Povera movement. Calzolari’s work has been characterised by a poetic of the sublime from his debut in the mid-1960s. This is reflected in the materials chosen and their living and transformative quality. His work is rich in emotive and sensorial cues, combining poetry and the everyday, simultaneously involving a number of senses and creating a unique experience.
