In 1809 the 2nd Lord Braybrooke, Richard Aldworth Neville, created the ‘Audley End Scrapbook’. Perhaps motivated by an interest in the history of the house, he collected and copied engravings and illustrations that told the story of the house, its surroundings and its succession of residents. The Scrapbook includes plans and elevations from various stages of the building’s history: from before 1660 when the converted abbey still stood, to Henry Winstanley’s detailed engravings of the late seventeenth-century palace, to illustrations of Robert Adam’s eighteenth-century neoclassical reception rooms for Sir John Griffin Griffin. It provides a valuable insight into the rich and varied history of Audley End.
