Sandro Botticelli's Madonna and Child with an Angel, created around 1465-1467, is a captivating painting that showcases the deep connection between Mary and her son, Jesus. This masterpiece is one of Botticelli’s earliest works and reveals his close artistic relationship with his teacher, Filippo Lippi.

Artistic Inspiration and Style

Botticelli's work is modelled on Filippo Lippi's The Virgin and Child with Two Angels. The painting features a realistic depiction of live infant models, which may be the earliest known depiction of the neurological Babinski reflex. Botticelli is also known for his contributions to the Sistine Chapel.

Description of the Painting

The painting depicts Madonna and Child in the center of the image, framed by a blue background and a church-like arch supported by Composite order pillars. The Madonna is dressed in red covered by a black cloak with gold accents and trim, while the Child wears only a white cloth. An angel, depicted as a young boy wearing white and red, hands the babe to its mother. All three figures are drawn with halos, with the Christ-Child’s being a cruciform halo.

Symbolism and Renaissance Ideals

Botticelli showcases a non-historic image of the Madonna and Child, drawing inspiration from Renaissance ideals of beauty. He continuously depicts Mary and Jesus with blonde, wavy hair and fair skin to elevate their image and create devotional perfection. Other examples of this include Madonna and Child, Madonna of the Magnificat, and Sant'Ambrogio Altarpiece (Botticelli).

Provenance and Exhibition History

The painting is housed in the Spedale degli Innocenti in Florence, Italy. It was probably executed for a member of the Medici family and has been part of various private collections in Paris and London before being acquired by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
