A Horse Fair, Chiriu, from the series the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido edition)

This illustrates the horse show held at Chiryu for about ten days every year, beginning on April 25. Some 400-500 horses are gathered here from as far away as the Koshinetsu Region (encompassing modern-day Yamanashi, Nagano and Niigata prefectures). Each horse is brought by its keeper to the consultation pine in the middle, and the bidding takes place under the pine tree.
