On this sheet, Xie has assembled clean tracing copies from a number of preliminary sketches. This two-step process is key to understanding the artist"s working method. Xie would first draw a subject in pencil or charcoal then either go over the sketch in ink or, as here, make a tracing copy. In so doing, Xie could refine and perfect his design, concentrating on making his individual brushstrokes beautiful.
