Sir William George Gillies (1898–1973) was born in Haddington, East Lothian, UK. He began his artistic education at Edinburgh College of Art but interrupted by WWI service with the Royal Engineers. Returning to art school, he excelled as a teacher for over 40 years. Gillis’ artistic development started with Cubism under André Lhote and travels to Italy (1924).
