Vittore Carpaccio (1465–1526) was an Italian painter who studied under Gentile Bellini and embraced Antonello da Messina’s style alongside Early Netherlandish influences. Known for his meticulous detail and narrative storytelling, exemplified by ‘The Legend of Saint Ursula,’ he remains a pivotal figure in Venetian Renaissance art.
The painting’s narrative aligns with the Golden Legend, portraying Saint George as a heroic defender of Christendom against pagan idolatry. Its commissioning coincided with Ottoman incursions into Europe, emphasizing Venice's commitment to safeguarding its Christian identity.
