A World War II (1939-1945) earthenware plate made on commission for a stationary dealer P.A.W. Philippona in The Hague,The Netherlands. The plate depicted with a willow tree and war burial is inscribed, “getrouw tot in den dood” meaning “faithful until death.” It is commemorative war plate dedicated to the fallen heroes that fought the Battle of Rotterdam between 10 and 14 May 1940 which ended with the German occupation of the Dutch city. The plate was painted by WMG Ten Hacken for De Porceleyne Fles or the Porcelain Jar factory in Delft. The plate was donated by Louise van Gybland Oosterhoff as the second of a three part donation of items and documents on Dutch history to the University of Pretoria in 1946.
