Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal (1863-1931) was born in Melbourne, Australia, the second son of John Simpson Mackennal (1832-1901), a Scottish immigrant and architectural sculptor, and Annabella Hyde. Bertram’s formative years were spent studying under his father's guidance, absorbing the principles of craftsmanship and artistic vision that would define his future career.
