It is the last in a series of works that engage with art history (in this case Judith and Holofernes) from a contemporary perspective. Despite not having any other objective than making it, I am interested in constructing an image permeable to the present and reality and experimenting with how a surface (painting) can awaken something profound, while the same scene has the potential to signify differently in various contexts. First drawn with a finger on a cellphone screen and then transferred to the canvas, in an explicit dialogue with the digital image and with a question about painting in relation to new media and ways of seeing and translating reality. The mounting system incorporates the idea of painting as a three-dimensional object with two faces (canvas stretcher) in contrast to the screen, the idea of weight against the digital archive, and the accumulation of time in a rock against the idea of layers. Things reveal to us what it means to cut the head off.

Биография художника

The Melancholic Grandeur of Francesco Moratti

Francesco Moratti (1693 – 1719) remains one of the most enigmatic and poignant figures in the annals of Venetian Baroque art. Born into the prestigious Mocenigo–Moratti clan, a lineage synonymous with the wealth and influence of Venice, his early life was framed by the opulent splendor of the Habsburg era. Yet, beneath the gilded surfaces of his aristocratic upbringing lay a profound sense of tragedy that would eventually permeate his artistic vision. Though his life was tragically truncated at the age of twenty-six, Moratti managed to leave behind a legacy that transcends the mere technical brilliance of his era, offering instead a window into a soul caught between classical idealism and an inescapable, haunting sorrow.

The foundation of Moratti’s mastery was laid through an exceptional education, meticulously curated by his father, Alessandro Mocenigo Morattii. Recognizing his son's innate sensitivity, Alessandro sought to ground Francesco's talent in the rigorous humanist traditions of the time. This pursuit led Moratti to the studio of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the titan of Venetian Baroque painting. Under Tiepolo’s tutelage, Moratti did not merely learn the mechanics of light and shadow; he inherited a sense of theatricality and a command over dramatic composition. From his mentor, he learned how to transform a canvas into a stage where myth and movement collide, yet Moratti would eventually diverge from Tiepolo's airy brightness to cultivate a more introspective and psychologically weighted style.

Mythology Through a Lens of Emotion

While many of his contemporaries utilized mythological themes as mere vehicles for decorative splendor or the celebration of classical perfection, Moratti approached the legends of Homer and Virgil with a unique, emotive depth. His work often explores the tension between the eternal nature of myth and the fragile, transient state of human emotion. In his hands, the epic struggles of antiquity are stripped of their distant, heroic detachment and are instead imbued with a palpable sense of pathos. This preoccupation with the psychological weight of narrative allowed him to bridge the gap between the grandiosity of the Baroque and a more intimate, contemplative form of storytelling.

The hallmarks of his mature style include:

  • Dramatic Composition: Utilizing the theatrical lessons of Tiepolo to create scenes that feel both monumental and immediate.
  • Psychological Depth: Infusing classical figures with a sense of vulnerability, reflecting the artist's own tumultuous personal experiences.
  • Venetian Sensibility: A masterful use of color and texture that honors the decorative traditions of his homeland while pushing toward a more somber, expressive palette.

A Legacy Interrupted

The historical significance of Francesco Moratti lies in his ability to capture a pivotal transition in European art—a moment where the exuberant energy of the Baroque began to grapple with a deeper, more melancholic introspection. His untimely death prevented the full realization of what might have been one of the most transformative careers of the 18th century. However, the works that survived him serve as powerful artifacts of a life lived at the intersection of privilege and pain. To study Moratti is to witness the beauty of a fleeting brilliance, a painter who used the grand language of myth to articulate the profound complexities of the human condition.
