Porto-Alegre foi uma das figuras artísticas mais destacadas do Segundo Reinado. Pintor, escritor, arquiteto e jornalista, foi também introdutor não só da caricatura mas também da disciplina de História da arte no Brasil, como o ensaio “Memória sobre a antiga Escola de Pintura Fluminense”, primeiro texto a tratar da história das belas-artes no Brasil. Em 1874 o imperador Dom Pedro II o nomeou primeiro Barão de Santo Ângelo, quando exercía funções diplomáticas em Lisboa, onde viria a morrer, em 1879.Hoje se sabe que o autor desta tela é Manuel de Araújo Porto Alegre, embora antes ela fosse atribuída a Louis Auguste Moreau, artista ativo no Brasil a partir do final da década de 1830. Sobre a pedra na lateral esquerda da pintura, lê-se uma inscrição em francês:
