This 15th-century panel depicts the episode of the Visitation, narrated in the Gospel of Luke: Mary is visiting her cousin Elizabeth after having received the announcement of the birth of Jesus from the angel. The two figures draw close to one another, captured by the artist in the act of hugging. Before being moved into the exhibition rooms of the Milan Duomo Museum, where it is currently held, the panel was placed in stained-glass window V01, from there it was removed in 1958 for the exhibition

Giovanni Recalcati Su Cartone Di Maestro Lombardo: A Legacy of Faith and Cycling

Born in Milan, Italy, in 1919, Giovanni Recalcati – often known simply as Nino – is a figure of considerable importance within the world of Italian art and, surprisingly, a notable presence in cycling history. While his name might not be instantly recognizable to the general public, his artistic output, particularly his religious paintings like “Visitation,” reveals a deep engagement with faith, tradition, and a distinctly Lombard aesthetic. Recalcati’s life has been one of quiet dedication to his craft, continuing to paint well into his nineties, a testament to an unwavering passion for art and a unique perspective on the world.

Recalcati's early years remain somewhat shrouded in anecdotal detail, though it is understood he received his initial artistic training within the context of Maestro Lombardo’s workshop. This formative period profoundly shaped his style – characterized by meticulous detail, rich color palettes, and a reverence for the conventions of the 15th-century Lombard school. This influence is immediately apparent in works like “Visitation,” where the figures are rendered with an almost photographic realism, yet imbued with a palpable sense of spiritual grace. The painting’s composition, reminiscent of early Renaissance panel paintings, showcases a masterful understanding of perspective and drapery – hallmarks of Lombardo's legacy.

The Visitation: A Study in Devotion

"Visitation," perhaps Recalcati’s most celebrated work, offers a poignant depiction of the biblical episode where Mary visits Elizabeth. The scene is rendered with remarkable sensitivity, capturing the intimate moment of connection between the two women. The artist skillfully employs light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the heart of the narrative. Note the careful attention to detail in the rendering of their garments – the flowing robes, the delicate folds – reflecting a dedication to portraying both the material and spiritual aspects of the scene. The positioning of the figures, close together, emphasizes the profound bond between them, conveying a sense of shared faith and mutual support.

The painting’s provenance is particularly interesting. Originally intended for a stained-glass window within the Milan Duomo, it was later moved to a temporary exhibition showcasing Lombard art from the Visconti and Sforza dynasties. This journey through various settings highlights the enduring value of Recalcati's work and its connection to the artistic heritage of Milan.

A Cycling Connection – An Unexpected Chapter

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Recalcati’s life took an unexpected turn when he became a member of the Italian cycling team that participated in the 1948 Tour de France. This involvement, seemingly disparate from his art career, reveals a lifelong passion for sport and a deep connection to the cultural landscape of Italy. While details about his role within the team are scarce, it’s clear this experience further enriched his understanding of Italian identity and its traditions – themes that often resonate in his paintings.

It's speculated that his cycling days may have influenced some of his works, particularly those depicting scenes of rural life or sporting events. The meticulous observation of detail and the appreciation for movement evident in his art could be attributed to this experience. This dual identity – artist and cyclist – adds a fascinating layer to Recalcati’s biography, demonstrating a man who embraced multiple passions throughout his life.

Legacy and Style

Giovanni Recalcati Su Cartone Di Maestro Lombardo's legacy lies in his faithful adherence to the traditions of Lombard painting while imbuing his work with a deeply personal spirituality. His style is characterized by its realism, attention to detail, and masterful use of color. He skillfully blended elements of the Renaissance with the more restrained aesthetic of the Lombard school, creating a unique visual language that reflects both his artistic training and his own individual sensibility.

Despite not achieving widespread fame during his lifetime, Recalcati’s work continues to be appreciated for its beauty, technical skill, and profound sense of faith. His paintings offer a valuable window into the cultural and religious landscape of Italy in the 20th century, and his story serves as a reminder that artistic expression can take unexpected forms and connect individuals to diverse aspects of life.
