This object was made with the same technique of religious icons and is inspired by the first portable videogames of the 1980’s. The work evokes a satirical poem, “The land of Cokaygne (part of the Kildare poems, Irland, XIV century), in which a Franciscan friar describes a worldly paradise where the monks can enjoy gluttony, lust and sexual disinhibitions. The subject was later approached as “Terra di Cuccagna” in Italy or “Jauja” in Spain by other artists. The work represents an idyllic moment of abundance created by the machines and robots in one of the possible futures that the Third Buenos Aires brings. The siphons nurture the earth with milk, butter, honey and wine, while a trash container recycles the bread and meat, which are transported to the greasy pole used during the Cuccagna fest.

Rodolfo Marqués: Decoding the Hacker Aesthetic

Rodolfo Marqués (San Antonio de Padua, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1982) is an Argentine artist whose work defies easy categorization, consistently pursuing investigations into social and cultural phenomena with a singular approach—one characterized by what he himself describes as “hacking,” disrupting conventional thought processes. This ethos of invention permeates his artistic production, resulting in a distinctive body of artifacts and pamphlets that stand apart from prevailing trends. Trained at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes in Buenos Aires, Marqués’s trajectory has been marked by numerous residencies and awards, solidifying his position as a prominent figure within contemporary Argentine art.
  • Early Influences: Marqués's artistic sensibilities were shaped early on by thinkers like Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, whose concepts of rhizomatic thought—rejecting hierarchical structures in favor of interconnected networks—became foundational to his creative methodology. This influence is palpable in his explorations of spaces and environments that challenge established paradigms.
  • Universidad Nacional de las Artes: His formal education at UNA provided him with a rigorous grounding in artistic principles, fostering a critical perspective on art history and contemporary cultural debates. It was here that he honed his skills as a painter and sculptor, establishing the groundwork for his subsequent experimental projects.

The Workshop Laboratory Aesthetic: A Spatial Exploration of Disruption Marqués’s artistic practice is defined by a deliberate aesthetic strategy—the replication of the workshop-laboratory environment. His installations are populated with devices that operate on principles often obscured from view, surrounded by paintings and projection drawings executed on unconventional supports like cardboard, plywood panels, gypsum boards, galvanized metal frames, and marquetry. This visual language isn’t merely decorative; it actively postulates scenarios originating from an imagination fueled by the impact of technology and industry—a deliberate provocation against accepted notions of reality. He seeks to create spaces that stimulate contemplation and question assumptions about how we perceive and interact with our surroundings.
  • Materials & Techniques: Marqués utilizes a diverse range of materials, prioritizing recycled or repurposed items—cardboard, plywood, galvanized metal—reflecting an awareness of ecological concerns alongside a fascination for industrial processes. His meticulous craftsmanship demonstrates a commitment to tactile experience and textural contrast.
  • Spatial Composition: The arrangement of his artworks within the workshop setting is carefully considered, creating layered compositions that invite viewers to navigate multiple perspectives. This spatial dimension underscores Marqués’s desire to disrupt conventional viewing habits and foster an immersive encounter with his work.

Publications & Conceptual Framework Beyond visual art, Marqués has engaged in writing and editorial pursuits, producing texts that critically examine contemporary aesthetic theory and delve into pivotal moments in Argentine history. Notably, he founded Nueva Bibliofilia Argentina (NBA), a collective dedicated to exploring the intersection of literature and artistic experimentation—a testament to his intellectual curiosity and commitment to fostering dialogue across disciplines. His conceptual framework centers on destabilizing established hierarchies and interrogating dominant narratives, mirroring the spirit of Renaissance utopian thinkers who envisioned worlds brimming with alternative possibilities.

Notable Exhibitions & Recognition Marqués’s exhibitions have garnered international acclaim, showcasing his distinctive artistic vision in venues ranging from Villa Waldberta in Munich to Galerie Fondazione Prada in Milan and Frieze New York. His projects—such as “Masao Gallery,” “Waldengallery,” “NADA,” and “Casa Nacional del Bicentenario”—have consistently pushed boundaries of artistic expression, exploring themes of technology, memory, and social critique. He has received numerous awards recognizing his contributions to Argentine art and culture, cementing his reputation as a visionary artist dedicated to challenging conventional perspectives.

Legacy & Continuing Exploration Rodolfo Marqués’s work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, embodying the ethos of “hacking” common sense—a refusal to accept unquestioned assumptions about artistic practice and cultural understanding. His ongoing explorations delve into complex issues surrounding identity, materiality, and spatial representation, reaffirming his commitment to innovation and fostering a critical engagement with the world around him.
