Collectible Description

A Moment Captured in Ink: The Whimsy of Abidin Dino

In the vast and storied career of the Turkish master Abidin Dino, few pieces capture the spontaneous joy of life quite like "At the Zoo - Goal!" Created in 1966, this intimate work serves as a delightful window into a moment where art meets the pulse of global celebration. The piece is not merely a drawing; it is a rhythmic fragment of history, born from Dino’s involvement with the documentary GOAL!, which commemorated the 1966 FIFA World Cup in London. Through his expressive hand, we are transported to a zoo enclosure where the raw power of a lion meets the playful, almost cinematic energy of a sporting triumph. The composition invites the viewer to step into a world where the boundaries between the wild and the human experience blur under the tip of a felt-tip pen.

The technique employed here is one of deliberate simplicity and profound impact. Utilizing the casual, fluid medium of felt-tip pen, Dino achieves a sense of immediacy that feels as though the ink is still drying on the page. The small scale of the work—a mere 5 x 27 cm—demands a close, intimate encounter, forcing the observer to lean in and discover the subtle details hidden within its narrow frame. This elongated format lends a storyboard-like quality to the piece, echoing Dino’s cinematic sensibilities. His lines are confident yet agile, capturing the texture of the lion's presence and the peripheral figures with an economy of stroke that is characteristic of his mastery over graphic expression.

Symbolism and the Spirit of Connection

Beyond its literal depiction of a zoo scene, "At the Zoo - Goal!" vibrates with symbolic resonance. The juxtaposition of the majestic lion with the exuberant text "Goal!" creates a fascinating tension between the primal nature of the beast and the structured excitement of human competition. This intersection reflects Dino’s lifelong fascination with social themes and the way global events—like the World Cup—unite disparate parts of the world through shared emotion. The two figures flanking the lion act as our surrogates, their silent observation mirroring our own curiosity. In this small space, Dino captures the essence of modern spectatorship: a blend of awe for the natural world and the infectious thrill of human achievement.

For the discerning collector or interior designer, this artwork offers a unique opportunity to introduce a piece of mid-century modern history into a contemporary setting. Its graphic nature and playful narrative make it an exceptional choice for spaces that value intellectual depth paired with lighthearted charm. Whether placed in a curated gallery wall or used as a focal point in a sophisticated study, a high-quality reproduction of this work brings with it the legacy of the D Group and the avant-garde spirit of Turkish modernism. It is an invitation to celebrate the small, triumphant moments that define our collective human story.

Abidin Dino: A Life in Art

Abidin Dino (1913-1993) was a pivotal Turkish artist whose work spanned several decades and reflected both his homeland’s rich cultural heritage and the influences of European modernism. His journey as an artist was marked by innovation, social commentary, and a deep commitment to artistic expression.

Early Life and Influences

Born on March 23, 1913, in Istanbul, Turkey, Abidin Dino came from an art-loving family. This early exposure fostered his passion for drawing and painting. His grandfather, Abidin Pasha Dino, was an Albanian Ottoman diplomat, adding a unique cultural dimension to his lineage. He spent parts of his childhood in Geneva and France, experiencing different artistic environments before returning to Istanbul in 1925.

Artistic Development & The D Group

Dino’s formal education was briefly interrupted when he left Robert College to dedicate himself fully to art. He quickly began publishing cartoons and articles, establishing himself as a rising talent. In 1933, alongside other innovative painters, he co-founded the “D Group”, a collective that challenged conventional artistic norms in Turkey. The D Group’s exhibitions were groundbreaking for their time.

Early Career & Soviet Union

A significant turning point came when Dino was invited by Soviet director Sergei Yutkevich to work at the Lenfil Studios in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in 1933. This experience, encouraged by Atatürk himself, exposed him to new artistic techniques and perspectives. He worked as a scenery designer and assistant director, even directing his own film, “Miners,” in Moscow, Kyiv, and Odesa.

Parisian Period & International Exposure

Dino spent considerable time in Paris, first from 1937-1939 and then settling there permanently in 1952. He encountered leading figures of the Parisian art world, including Gertrude Stein, Tristan Tzara, and Pablo Picasso. This period was crucial for his artistic development, allowing him to absorb new influences and refine his style.
