Designer Afroditi Hera from Cyprus exchanged with The Kiribati Handicraft Association to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. Afroditi designed her signature kaftan in blue silk overlaid with a printed chiffon of her own design. Through the use of buttons the look can be worn in three different ways, and has been completed with traditional ornamental beading created by artisans in Kiribati using grass, paper and shells. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and High Commission Australia, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

Artist Biography

Afroditi Hera: A Cypriot Vision of Timeless Elegance

Born on the sun-drenched Greek side of Cyprus in 1970, Afroditi Hera’s journey is one of captivating transformation – a blending of ancient heritage with contemporary design. From her early years immersed in the rich cultural tapestry of her island home, she has cultivated a unique aesthetic that resonates with both classical grandeur and modern sensibility. Her brand, founded in 2001, isn't merely about clothing; it’s an exploration of memory, texture, and the enduring allure of timeless silhouettes.

The Genesis of a Brand: Echoes of Antiquity

Afroditi Hera’s creative vision is deeply rooted in the imagery of ancient Greece and Rome. She deliberately draws inspiration from the flowing drapery of togas, reimagining them with a lightness and fluidity that feels utterly modern. This deliberate nod to history isn't simply decorative; it represents a conscious effort to connect with a lineage of artistic tradition while simultaneously forging her own distinct path. The initial collection, characterized by loose-fitting dresses imbued with the “antique energies” she describes, immediately captured attention for its evocative quality and unexpected elegance.

Milanese Momentum: Collaboration and Recognition

Choosing Milan as the base for her brand was a strategic move, placing Afroditi Hera within one of the world’s foremost fashion capitals. This decision proved pivotal in 2009 when she secured a prestigious commission from L’Oréal – a full collection presented at the Zénith in Paris during “Inspiration,” the company's 100th anniversary show. The collection, a resounding success, solidified her reputation and brought her work to an international audience. This marked a significant turning point, demonstrating her ability to translate conceptual ideas into commercially viable and critically acclaimed designs.

Beyond Dresses: Leather’s Transformative Power

Afroditi Hera's artistry extends far beyond the realm of fabric; she is equally celebrated for her innovative work with leather. She doesn’t simply use it – she manipulates it, molding and shaping it to create textures and contrasts that are both dramatic and refined. This skill has become a hallmark of her brand, adding another layer of complexity and sophistication to her designs. The last three seasons have seen the emergence of her signature “kaftan,” light tunics crafted from hand-woven silk, reversible, and featuring an ingenious hidden zip for adaptable styling – a testament to both practicality and artistic vision.

A Modern Kaftan & Global Recognition

Afroditi Hera’s evolution is particularly evident in her reimagining of the traditional kaftan. What was once a simple garment has been elevated into a statement piece, reflecting her commitment to both heritage and innovation. In 2018, she represented Cyprus at Buckingham Palace during The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, an event curated by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton, showcasing her designs alongside artisans from around the world. This prestigious recognition further cemented her position as a leading voice in contemporary fashion, demonstrating her ability to blend Cypriot tradition with global influence. Her work has been featured in publications like BIG SEE, highlighting her continued success and dedication to sustainable practices.

  • Key Techniques: Hand-weaving of silk, intricate leather manipulation, innovative use of hidden closures.
  • Signature Style: Flowing silhouettes inspired by ancient Greek drapery, combined with modern minimalism.
  • Notable Achievements: Commissioned collection for L’Oréal (2009), Representation at Buckingham Palace (2018).

Afroditi Hera's work is more than just fashion; it’s a celebration of heritage, artistry, and the enduring power of timeless design. Her brand continues to evolve, pushing boundaries while honoring its roots, solidifying her place as a significant figure in the world of contemporary couture.
