Alfonso X. Peña nos muestra en esta escena campirana del estado de Tamaulipas, en un estilo muy personal, la tradición de la caza del venado cola blanca. En un atardecer, los cazadores se disponen a preparar el café para disfrutar de un descanso, mientras dos ayudantes cargan en hombros a su presa. En un paisaje realizado con formas muy estilizadas y de sutiles matices, la escena está pintada en una gama donde predominan los tonos azules. Magistralmente trabajada, como él solía hacerlo, muy a la manera de los pintores de la generación posterior a lo que fue llamada la Escuela Mexicana de Pintura, la obra muestra dos influencias muy diluídas, la de Diego Rivera y Fermín Revueltas, dos de los grandes maestros del muralismo. Se puede advertir también en esta escena una gran influencia del cine mexicano de los años cuarenta, entrelazando el campo y la ciudad industrializada. De la misma forma que las obras de la gráfica popular daban prioridad a las escenas de los trabajadores del campo y a la problemática social. Alfonso X. Peña es un pintor que aún no ha sido valorizado por los críticos de arte. Apreciado por sólo un pequeño grupo de coleccionistas, su obra tiene una calidad artística innegable que lo situará muy pronto en el lugar que se merece. RP
