Nel 1524, terminati i lavori per la grande impresa decorativa di San Giovanni Evangelista, Correggio viene incaricato dal monaco benedettino Placido del Bono di eseguire per la cappella di famiglia posta nella medesima chiesa due tele: il Compianto su Cristo Morto e il Martirio dei Santi Placido, Flavia, Eutichio, Vittorino.Nel Compianto Correggio adotta una soluzione iconografica del tutto nuova: Cristo, appena deposto dalla croce, giace a terra col capo abbandonato sul grembo della madre, il corpo livido, i piedi e le mani ancora contratti per la tensione dei chiodi. La Vergine, incapace di sopportare questo straziante contatto fisico, sviene, sostenuta da Giovanni, mentre Maddalena, ai piedi di Gesù, incurante di ciò che avviene intorno a lei, è vinta da un sentimento di dolorosa tristezza.La tragedia si è definitivamente compiuta: il sacrificio di Cristo ci viene mostrato in primo piano in tutta la sua atroce e umana sofferenza, suscitando nello spettatore una forte reazione emotiva e un sentimento di partecipe, dolente compassione.Lo schema compositivo asimmetrico e il taglio orizzontale del dipinto (soluzione del tutto nuova in ambito parmense) conferiscono alla scena un intenso patetismo, che anticipa il linguaggio della pittura barocca.
