Ronde-bosse figures depicting life-size animals. As well as making dinner sets and other crockery, Porcelanas Bidasoa also manufactured purely decorative items based on natural models. The artists drew their inspiration from both the animal world (as in the photo) and from trees and plants. A mould was made faithfully reproducing the form and colour of the models. To do this, the company had a group of very fine local artists who carried out or directed the entire process: preparation of the figure, moulds, joining the different moulded pieces and hand-painting or design of the decoration. The company also worked with major international artists. Their designs were used especially for of crockery or ornamental items. The figure of the duck was inglaze painted by hand by Antonio Mateo in 1983. The base is stamped

Artist Biography

The Visionary Tapestry of Antonio Mateo LaHoz

Born in the serene landscapes of Narbonne, France, in 1993, Antonio Mateo LaHoz has emerged as a compelling presence in the contemporary art world. His work serves as a bridge between the weight of historical tradition and the boundless energy of modern innovation. To encounter a LaHoz canvas is to enter a space where meticulous observation meets bold, experimental spirit, creating pieces that resonate with both a sense of timelessness and a forward-thinking pulse. His artistic identity is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Provence, a region where the light and atmosphere have long inspired masters of the past.

The foundations of his aesthetic were laid during his formative years, as he absorbed the profound legacies of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The evocative landscapes of Claude Monet and the emotive, textured brushwork of Vincent van Gogh acted as early mentors, instilling in him a reverence for capturing fleeting moments of beauty. This early exposure taught LaHoz that color and texture are not merely tools for representation but are essential vehicles for conveying deep-seated human emotion and the ephemeral nature of light.

Technical Mastery and Stylistic Evolution

LaHoz’s formal journey led him to the prestigious École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was within these hallowed halls that he refined his command over oil painting, mastering the delicate art of nuanced tonal gradations. Yet, LaHoz refused to remain a mere student of the past. He sought to push the boundaries of classical training by synthesizing traditional techniques with the raw, uninhibited energy of Abstract Expressionism and the dreamlike logic of Surrealism. This synthesis has resulted in a visual language that is uniquely his own—one that feels grounded in the earth yet propelled by the imagination.

His signature style is instantly recognizable through its tactile, sculptural quality. LaHoz often employs a palette knife to apply layered brushstrokes, creating textured surfaces that mimic the ruggedness of geological formations. His canvases are characterized by:

  • Expansive Landscapes: Vast, sweeping vistas that invite the viewer to lose themselves in the scale of nature.
  • Muted Palettes: A sophisticated use of earthy tones that provide a sense of stability and organic truth.
  • Vibrant Accents: Sudden, intentional bursts of color that pierce through the muted tones, acting as emotional focal points.

Themes of Resilience and the Sublime

Beyond the technical brilliance of his work lies a profound philosophical depth. LaHoz’s recurring motifs—most notably solitary trees silhouetted against dramatic, turbulent skies—serve as powerful metaphors for the human condition. These images explore themes of resilience, solitude, and the sublime beauty of the natural world. In his hands, a single tree is not just a botanical subject but a symbol of endurance amidst the shifting winds of existence.

His paintings function as meditations on peace and persistence. By blending the heavy textures of the earth with the ethereal qualities of light and sky, LaHoz creates a dialogue between the permanent and the transient. As his career continues to evolve, he remains a vital voice for collectors and enthusiasts alike, offering a window into a world where tradition is not a cage, but a foundation upon which new, breathtaking realities can be built.
