early life and football career
basil barrington watson cd, a renowned jamaican painter, was born on january 9, 1931, in lucea, jamaica. before embarking on his artistic journey, watson made a name for himself as a football player at kingston college.artistic pursuits and education
at the age of 20, watson enrolled at the royal college of art in london, marking the beginning of his artistic yearnings. he furthered his studies at académie de la grande chaumière in paris and the rijksacademie in amsterdam.teaching and directorial roles
upon returning to jamaica, watson became the first director of studies at the jamaica school of art. he also co-founded the contemporary jamaican artists' association (1964–74). additionally, he served as a visiting professor at spelman college in atlanta.awards and exhibitions
watson's artistic prowess was recognized with a prize at the first spanish biennale in barcelona (1967). in 2000, he was awarded the gold musgrave medal by the institute of jamaica. his works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally.personal life and legacy
