Chang Shuhong, born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang provice. In 1923 he graduated from Zhejiang Provincial A Class Industrial School (now Zhejiang University). From 1927 he trained in the National School of Fine Arts of Lyon (École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon). He successively won silver and gold madals in Paris Salon. In 1936 he returned to China as head of Western Art Dept., National Beiping Art College and the professor of National Academy of Art. In 1944-1982 he was the director of National Dunhuang Research Institute. He devoted his life to the Dunhuang art research and protection work.
