early life and training
charles paul landon, a french painter and popular writer on art and artists, was born on october 12, 1760, in nonant-le-pin, france. he entered the studio of jean-baptiste regnault, where he formed a lifelong friendship with robert lefèvre. landon won the first prize of the academy in 1792, allowing him to study at the french academy in rome for five years.artistic career
upon his return from italy, landon's artistic style was influenced by the patronage conditions of the french revolution. he began exhibiting his work in 1795 and continued to do so until 1814. notable paintings include:- mother's lesson, which was engraved and widely popularized
- daedalus and icarus (1799), showcased at the musée des beaux-arts et de la dentelle, alençon
- leda (1801), awarded a merit prize and now displayed at the château de fontainebleau
writing and art criticism
landon's writing on art gained more recognition than his painting. he published nearly 100 volumes during his lifetime, including collaborations with the influential journal des arts, des sciences et de la littérature. as a conservator of paintings at the louvre and corresponding member of the institut, landon's work had a significant impact on the art world.legacy
