Dana Awartani’s eight hanging embroideries, Love is my Law, Love is my Faith are inspired by eight love poems by Ibn Arabi that describe an experience he had at the Ka’aba in Mecca. They are intricate, meticulously patterned and steeped in the study of mathematics. Her practice and this project is a continual act of the revival of the practices of Islamic geometry and its highly codified forms. Using the practice of traditional textiles Awartani creates genealogies of meaning that act as a form of meditation, praying, contemplation and search for the inner spirit rather than outer. Her works are a visual representation of a culturally specific time and space.

Artist Biography

The Geometry of the Soul: The Artistry of Dana Awartani

In the vibrant, sun-drenched landscape of Jeddah, where the ancient echoes of the Red Sea meet the pulse of modern Saudi Arabia, the work of Dana Awartani unfolds as a profound meditation on continuity. A visual artist of Palestinian ethnicity, Awartani does not merely create images; she weaves together the fragmented threads of history, mathematics, and spirituality. Her practice is a delicate bridge between the ancestral and the avant-garde, a space where the rigid precision of Islamic geometric patterns meets the fluid, experimental realms of video art and sand mosaic. To encounter her work is to enter a sanctuary of contemplation, where every line and intersection serves as a gateway to a deeper, universal truth.

Awartani’s artistic journey is marked by a rigorous pursuit of mastery across diverse disciplines. Her educational path reflects a deep commitment to both conceptual depth and technical precision, beginning with a Foundation Degree from the Byam Shaw School of Art and a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. However, it was her time at The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London that truly anchored her practice in the heritage she seeks to revive. There, she immersed herself in the ancient languages of stained glass, miniature painting, and gilding. Driven by an insatiable desire to master the intricate art of text illumination, she even sought specialized instruction in Turkey, demonstrating a nomadic devotion to the preservation of vanishing crafts.

A Tapestry of Tradition and Innovation

The essence of Awartani’s aesthetic lies in her ability to translate the sacred into the contemporary. She draws heavily from the Quranic concept of sacred geometry, viewing mathematical patterns not as mere decoration, but as a universal language capable of conveying profound spiritual insights across cultural and religious boundaries. Her work often explores the relationship between the infinite and the finite, using highly codified forms to represent the unseen rhythms of the universe. This is perhaps most beautifully realized in her series "Love is my Law, Love is my Faith," where eight hanging embroideries are inspired by the mystical love poems of Ibn Arabi. In these pieces, the meticulous study of mathematics meets the tactile warmth of traditional textiles, creating a genealogical map of meaning that invites the viewer into a state of prayerful meditation.

Beyond the geometric, Awartani’s work is deeply rooted in the materiality of the natural world. She frequently employs natural pigments derived from local flora and fauna, an ethical choice that honors indigenous knowledge systems and promotes sustainability. Her ongoing series, “Come, let me heal your wounds. Let me mend your broken bones,” exemplifies this connection to the earth; here, she utilizes silk fabrics dyed with medicinal herbs, echoing centuries-old traditions of healing through craft. Through these methods, her art becomes a living organism, breathing with the scents and colors of the landscapes that inform her identity.

Legacy and Global Resonance

The significance of Dana Awartani’s contribution to contemporary art lies in her refusal to see tradition as a relic of the past. Instead, she treats it as a vital, evolving force. By integrating ancient techniques—such as tile-work, parquetry, and illumination—into modern mediums like video and sand mosaic, she ensures that the rich heritage of Middle Eastern artmaking remains relevant in a globalized art dialogue. Her work has garnered significant international acclaim, including recognition at prestigious platforms such as the Venice Biennale, marking her as a pivotal figure in the contemporary movement of Islamic abstraction.

Ultimately, Awartani’s art serves as a reminder that beauty and truth are often found in the patterns we overlook in our daily lives. As she notes, many of us are surrounded by this fine geometry in mosques and architecture without truly seeing it. Through her meticulous hand, these hidden structures are brought into the light, offering a visual language that speaks to the shared human experience of seeking order, harmony, and the divine within the complexity of existence.
