A Napoleonic War Dutch Plateelbakkerij Delft or Pottery Bakery Delft commemorative plate is one of a set consisting of 14 plates. The pottery that made these, although they had Delft, a town in The Netherlands in their name was made in Amsterdam. Decorated in blue and red the plate commemorates the opening of the Peace Palace in The Hague on 28 August 1913, it was originally built to provide a symbolic home for the permanent World Court of Arbitration. Today it is home of the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, ranks among the world’s oldest, grandest and most important buildings devoted to world peace. The plate is decorated with an image of the palace and the Latin words “ad perpetuam rei memoriam Pax” in English: “As a permanent Memorial to Peace”. The plate was donated by Louise van Gybland Oosterhoff to the University of Pretoria in 1937.
