The polar bear was mounted by taxidermists at the Museum für Naturkunde, who have won several taxidermy awards. In the summer of 2013, Knut became Berlin’s climate ambassador at the national natural history museum of the Netherlands, the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leyden. Knut enthused more than 150,000 visitors. He has been part of the exhibition “Masterpieces of Taxidermy” since July 2014.

Artist Biography

The Art of Eternal Life: The Collaborative Mastery of Matzke, Stein, and Radke

In the quiet, hallowed halls of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, a unique form of artistry breathes life into the past. This is not the art of canvas and pigment, but rather the profound, meticulous discipline of taxidermy, practiced with unparalleled skill by the triumvir and masters Detlev Matzke, Robert Stein, and Carola Radke. Their work transcends mere preservation; it is a delicate dance between biological science and sculptural expression. To witness their creations is to encounter the wild, frozen in a moment of eternal grace, where the boundary between the organic and the reconstructed becomes beautifully indistinguishable.

The foundations of their collaborative genius lie in a shared reverence for the natural world. For Detlev Matzke, the journey began with an early fascination with animal anatomy, a deep-seated curiosity about the intricate biological machinery that governs life. This scientific rigor was complemented by Robert Stein’s disciplined approach, characterized by years of rigorous study and practical experience that refined his ability to translate anatomical truth into artistic form. Carola Radke brought a vital third dimension to their partnership, weaving a passion for conservation into the very fabric of their technical pursuits. Together, they developed a holistic methodology that treats every specimen not merely as an object of study, but as a subject worthy of profound aesthetic dignity.

Technique and the Pursuit of Anatomical Truth

The mastery of this trio is found in their command over the traditional, painstaking techniques passed down through generations of artisans. Their process is an arduous journey of dermoplasty, involving anatomical dissection, meticulous sculpting of forms, and a level of detail that borders on the obsessive. They do not simply recreate the exterior of an animal; they reconstruct its very essence. Through the careful manipulation of textures and the precise application of color, they capture the subtle nuances of movement, posture, and expression that define a living creature.

Their work is defined by several key technical pillars:

  • Anatomical Precision: A deep understanding of skeletal and muscular structures to ensure every mount possesses structural integrity and biological accuracy.
  • Sculptural Artistry: The ability to mold synthetic or organic materials into lifelike shapes that mimic the weight and presence of real flesh.
  • Surface Realism: The painstaking application of painting and texture to replicate the sheen of fur, the dampness of a nose, or the translucency of an eye.

A Legacy Carved in Iconography

Perhaps no project has cemented their international reputation more than their work on Knut, the legendary polar bear cub of the Berlin Zoo. As Knut became a global phenomenon and a symbol of climate awareness, the work of Matzke, Stein, and Radke provided the physical vessel for his story. Their masterful reconstruction of Knut’s anatomy allowed audiences to connect emotionally with a creature that had become a cultural icon. This project elevated their status from skilled technicians to pioneers of natural history art, demonstrating how taxidermy can serve as a powerful medium for scientific communication and emotional engagement.

Beyond the fame of Knut, their contributions to the scientific community are immeasurable. By creating specimens that serve as both educational tools and works of art, they have helped bridge the gap between the laboratory and the public consciousness. Their dedication ensures that the splendor of the natural world is not lost to time, but is instead preserved in a state of permanent, breathtaking vitality, inviting every visitor to marvel at the intricate beauty of life on Earth.
