Donald Reichert (1932 – 2013)Donald Reichert was best known as an abstract expressionist painter. His elegantly executed paintings in the abstract expressionist style often combined techniques drawn from colour-field painting. Early in his career, Reichert received praise from modern art critic Clement Greenberg. His best known works were large abstract canvasses incorporating features of the landscapes surrounding him. Painted outdoors, these paintings were laid on the uneven ground and allowed to acquire an impression of the earth beneath them. A noted photographer and digital media artist, Reichert sometimes incorporated his photographs into his paintings. His proficiency as an airplane pilot provided him the opportunity to see the world and photograph it from above.Donald Reichert obtained his BFA at the University of Manitoba and attended the Instituto Allende of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. He taught for many years at the University of Manitoba and Mount Allison University. Reichert was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He was also affiliated with the Canadian art publication Border Crossings. His work has been exhibited widely in Canada and abroad. He is represented in private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
