eduardo afonso viana, a prominent figure in the history of portuguese art, was born in lisbon in 1881. he began his artistic journey at the academia de belas artes de lisboa, where he honed his skills alongside other notable artists of his time. in 1905, viana took his talents to paris, studying under the tutelage of jean-paul laurens, further refining his craft.

artistic style and influences

viana's approach to modern painting was characterized by a conservative yet innovative spirit. he was one of the first modern generation in portuguese painting, alongside amadeo de souza cardoso and almada negreiros. the influence of robert delaunay and sonia delaunay, whom he befriended during their time in portugal, is evident in his 1916 works, showcasing a unique blend of modern styles. later, viana's post-impressionist style, inspired by cézanne, produced some of his most notable pieces.
