Elisabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun (? – ?)

Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) was a leading portraitist of 18th-century French aristocracy, famed for her elegant depictions of Marie Antoinette and other prominent figures. Her Rococo and Neoclassical style captured both likeness and personality with refined beauty.

Vigée Le Brun participated in the Salon of 1785 with more than ten submissions, including this portrayal of Calonne (1734–1802), controller general of finances. He holds a document inscribed Au Roi (To the King), which demonstrates the royal confidence he enjoyed. The painter, in a remarkable character study, emphasizes his likability. The fabrics and accessories that surround him attest to the artist’s masterly rendering of texture and detail.
